film poster.

«You can't kill off music just because Timbuktu has been occupied. If they've closed the doors of Timbuktu we'll open up the doors to the rest of the world. We want to say no! You want us to stop? ...well, we're not stopping». With these words, part of a longer interview to Andy Morgan, Manny Ansar, the director of the Festival au Désert in Timbuktu reacted to the Islamists' takeover of the region in 2013. In 2014 it seemed that the security situation was gradually recovering. So I was contacted by film director Michael Meredith who was shooting a film on the “return“ of music in Timbuktu to design his film poster. Unfortunatly to date the return fo music in the region is yet to come. The extraordinary musicians of Mali, who gave rhythm to people's lives, is yet to return. Music in the country used to be everywhere. Musicians, dancers, performers created inspiring sounds in some of the most difficult living conditions of West Africa. Everything used to be transmitted through music, through poetry, through songs. Playing, dancing and singing is for Malian people a means against oppression and social alienation, a moment of collective cohesion, a way to address social campaigns. A means of endurance.

Still waiting for the film to be shooted.
